Piranesi was a novel written by Susana Clarke and was published in September of 2020. Piranesi was Clarkes 2nd novel and by far her most successful novel. It went on to win the ¨Women's prize for fiction¨ in 2021. While her own personal experiences don't align with the novel due to its rather out there concept it does draw from many different ideas. The main one being from the art Giovanni Battista Piranesi who drew impossible architecture at unimaginable scales that often lacked essentials like doors or pointless bridges. This is mimicked in the novel through the landscape of the ¨house¨(the name given to the extra dimensional space). I already summarized it but a guy gets trapped in another dimension that seems to be constructed from all of human history ideas and thoughts across time. It starts in early history and presumably goes on forever. These thoughts are shown through statues that show something that you might see during the era. The story ties into memories with the main character losing them when he enters the house. He forgets the outside world and adopts a new foreign identity. He is eventually rescued but now he has to live with a past he does not know. The story leaves us with the question of how much memory truly is who we are and if he can salvage his old life or just build one anew. I like this story. I didnt read it but listened to it via audio book and I highly recommend it. It is very enjoyable.
